Spring has arrived and there are all sorts of exciting news we’d like to share with you.
First of all, it’s now been a few weeks since the launch of our new cotton canvas bags and new suede additions – have you seen the luxuriously smooth suede Austin backpack ? - and whilst there are already a few designs proving to lead the way, we’ll resist the urge to call out favourites and give them all a fair chance. Which one is your favourite? Drop us a comment below.
Secondly, we have launched our Debut Men’s Collection and whilst only consisting of two backpacks (so far), the Malcolm and Leonard, it is already opening up exciting new prospects for CRU, with new stockists in England and also our very first stockist in France. When you find yourself in the central district of Le Marais in Paris make sure to pay our trendy menswear stockist, Roganel, based on Rue des Archives a visit – it’s walking distance from Le Palace Royal.
Our bags have travelled far and wide, including Zurich, Paris and Munich, where they are getting ready for summer and soaking up all sorts of compliments.
Check out Judith Crawford’s fabulous blog article here http://talesofjude.com/cru-london-bag-bucketlist/ where she has effortlessly styled our Charlotte bucket bag in a trendy, not-trying-too-hard way. We just love it!
There has been many other exciting collaborations of which you can find out more on our Instagram profile @cru_london
Check back soon – there are plenty more exciting developments in the pipeline which we hope to share with you very soon. Meanwhile, enjoy the most magical season of the year; Spring! 😊
It's been an exciting start to the year for us, with all sort of creative projects coming to fruition, including our brand new collection of bags introducing not only a new material to our existing range of leather and suede, but also a fresh colour palette.
The essence of the new collection is utilitarian simplicity which has been captured in the clean, functional designs offering easy access and sufficient room, perfect for modern, active lifestyles of both city-trotters and those out enjoying the fresh country air.
As much as we love the character our natural leather gains with time we felt a more versatile material such as cotton canvas was needed to offer more diversity to the range. As ever, we wanted to offer our customers a quality product so we made sure to find the best partner who shared the same ethos and high quality standards as CRU.
We were very lucky to find a suitable partner in Northern Ireland who not only met all of these requirements but who also carries a rich heritage with its cotton mills being one of the very oldest in Northern Ireland, in use for well over 200 years. We carefully inspected their range of textiles and found the quality of their cotton canvas to be second to none, and best yet, waterproof. We could hardly ask for a better candidate!
Given the success of our backpack designs over the last few seasons we have decided to focus our energies on this strength, so our new collection introduces a number of new, practical backpack designs, including our very first Men's backpack which is already proving a hit with independent boutiques snapping it up before neighbouring stores can even think to get their hands on it. :-)
We are also excited to be launching a simple and elegant new drawstring bucket bag, as well as a few new and improved designs which we're sure you'll approve of.
Here is a little sneak peek of the behind the scenes coverage of our SS17 campaign shoot completed this week...
Make sure to check back soon!
We recently participated in an exciting pop-up event in Berlin whereby approximately 20 niche label designers had the chance to exhibit a selection of their designs.
The event was organised by the amazing team at the Department of Trade as a mission to introduce a small selection of new British designers with promising growth prospects to the German market.
CRU London's designs were very well received, sitting alongside the likes of unisex jeans label Bethnals, one of the fellow designers also stocked at our stockist, Ruskin, in Whitstable, Kent. Speaking of which, this gem of a boutique clearly has an eye for new, trendy design as they've recently been voted Boutique of the Week by The Times. Definitely one to check out on your next visit to the East Coast!
Whilst only a short event lasting one week, our Managing Director managed to attend the launch party in celebration of all the designers on show and she was lucky enough to meet the wife of the German Ambassador, Lady Sirinat Wood. Clearly impressed with the turnout, Lady Wood took her time exploring all the designers whilst sipping on some of the freshly made drinks from the on-site bar team.
The event's team didn't hold back by any means, even arranging for a DJ and authentic Frankfurter carriage parked on the front pavement serving fresh hot dogs. We couldn't have wished for a cooler showcase of our bags! Match made in heaven ;-)
This was hopefully only the start of our relationship with Germany as we hope to find a more permanent home for our bags there very soon, hopefully starting with the trendy landscape of Berlin! We'll of course keep you posted. :-)
It’s been a hectic few weeks at the CRU HQ so we can hardly keep up with all the exciting developments we’d like to share with you…
Back in September we had the opportunity to showcase our collection of leather handbags and backpacks, both new and old, at The Hoxton Hotel in Shoreditch. It formed part of a collaboration between Felicities and Mastered, a tailored fashion programme aimed at supporting a new breed of fashion designers.
CRU London formed part of a number of emerging designers showcasing their collections on the day, other designers including Ariella, Sports Philosophy, The Season Hats and Linnie McLarty.
The event was held in the spectacular Apartment area within the hotel which is beautifully decorated and we were especially lucky to have our bags displayed on a sleek and charming library unit, having our backpacks sitting alongside literary classics which we thought was just perfect. After all, our backpacks do tend to appeal to the bookworms amongst us!
The event was a huge success, drawing all sorts of creatives from the fashion industry including stylists, make-up artists, models and photographers taking part in capturing the collections from every possible angle and styled in every possible manner, from retro-chic to couture. Visitors consisted of locals as well outsiders from Europe and even Japan, all scoping out the new talent for their buying portfolios or next month’s magazine feature.
The stars of the show from CRU’s collection were definitely our Charlotte bucket bag and also our brand new Calvin and Herbert backpacks, the first chance they had to show off their ever so silky suede panels. Definitely a feature you’ll come to see a lot more of, so keep your eyes peeled.
What an amazing experience! We hope to have a repeat event with all these lovely folks very soon.
We are thrilled to announce that a small selection of our bags are now available from The Collaborative Store in London's Marylebone, yards away from the trendy Chiltern Firehouse hotel, Monocle store, Sunspel and many other exclusive boutiques.
After two successful pop-ups in Shoreditch, The Collaborative Store has launched its first permanent flagship store on Blandford Street.
The store is the perfect setting for our bags, its brand DNA being to create a space where customers can discover an edit of niche independent labels, for people curious about the story behind the pieces they buy.
The larger, permanent space means art and contemporary furniture has now been added to the curated mix, creating more of a concept store and gallery space than simply a fashion boutique.
By sheer coincidence, the store also chose to collaborate with one of our favourite street artists, Anna Laurini, who has made a name for herself in Shoreditch and is now extending her artwork to adorn the streets of New York.
Anna's genuine positivism is clearly presented in her choice of colors and shapes as she tries to transmit her emotions to the viewer. Her vibrant expressionist style has been very much a result of her experience of living and working as an artist in the heart of the world most stimulating metropolis as London and New York.
Need we say more? Make sure to pay The Collaborative Store a visit next time you find yourself in trendy Marylebone!
58 Blandford Street, London, W1U 7JB
We are very excited to have joined forces with Alison Lowe, founder of Felicities boutique PR agency, this month. Just another successful collaboration facilitated by the UKFT of which we are both members.
Felicities has been established for over 10 years and have gained a reputation for casting the spotlight onto emerging talent such as CRU.
Make sure to keep your eyes peeled over the next few months and check back soon to see the latest progress!
We are very excited to announce that our Creative Director & Co-founder, Petru van der Walt, will be speaking as part of four designer panellists around the topic of ‘Breaking into Fashion’ on Thursday 28th July at the Google Campus London. They will discuss the challenges experienced by most emerging designers during the early stages of setting up a new fashion label and the common hurdles, they themselves, have overcome and learnt from since launching.
The event is to be hosted by online marketplace Tarlee.com , one of CRU London’s stockists, and will aim to shed light on the challenges faced by many new designers in an overwhelmingly saturated market where even the most talented designers struggle to gain the necessary visibility to succeed.
Tarlee was founded around the basis of developing an easy to use platform to bring hard-to-find, distinctive designers to the forefront of fashion rather than being forced to hide in the shadows of high-street retail giants. It therefore is an invaluable platform for emerging designers such as ourselves and also for the fashion conscious consumer looking for something a bit more unusual.
Speaking alongside designers of labels Black & Sigi, Lily & Carter and Draper’s Awards Shortlisted Niche Label of the Year, Daughter of Jon, CRU’s co-founder will aim to discuss and give her insights on the role of marketing and PR to gain the necessary brand visibility, keeping production costs in check, developing distribution channels and touching on sustainability and ethical concerns.
For further information visit Tarlee’s website for the full programme
Attendance is free and tickets can be reserved using the link on Tarlee’s page.
If you experience any problems, please contact us directly and we may be able to make arrangements for tickets as we’re expected to have a full-house as it stands.
Hope to see you there!

Last week CRU London’s founders were proud to attend Chloe James Lifestyle’s bi-annual fashion show in support of local charity The OLLIE Foundation.
The OLLIE Foundation was founded by three mothers who sadly lost their teenage children to suicide and has since devoted their time and efforts to ensure that no other parent suffers the same loss they did, raising awareness of the risks and tell-tale signs to look out for.
CRU London’s bags have been stocked at Chloe James Lifestyle – known by locals as St. Albans ‘little Liberty’ – since March and got their moment in the spotlight last week, 21st April, when Donna Nichol, owner of Chloe James Lifestyle, hosted an incredible show consisting of approximately sixty unique outfits including our Appleby Bucket bag, Old Nichol and Gordon backpacks as key accessories.
The evening was a great success, being the perfect opportunity to raise awareness on a much needed subject whilst building up excitement over the new SS16 season’s wardrobe. Donna curated a fresh and beautiful range of designers providing plenty of inspiration for ladies on how to spruce up their wardrobe over the coming weeks and even on the very night!
Following the fashion show, the store remained open until late whilst ladies scurried around in search of their perfect outfit. CRU’s founders joined in and offered a sneak peek of their AW16 collection to be launched later this year, including a compact mini bucket bag and plenty more trendy backpacks which have become the backbone and signature style of the brand.
Many thanks to Donna and the rest of her team for an amazing evening! Well done for raising a considerable £1230 in funds for OLLIE. It’s wonderful to have fashion working towards such a worthy and inspiring cause and we are very proud to have been involved.
Congratulations as well to the lucky lady who won our Old Nichol backpack from the raffle. Take good care of it, enjoy the leather and know that it was made to keep you in good company for many years. It will only get better with time and use.
